Robert Glover

Robert Glover was one of 12 people executed as heretics for his Protestant faith during the reigns of King Henry VIII and Queen Mary I. He was burned at stake September 20, 1555 in Coventry in West Midlands County in England.

He was born at Mancetter, Warwickshire and had been educated at Eton and Kings College of Cambridge receiving his BA in 1533 and his MA in 1541. He remained a fellow there until 1543. He married a niece of Hugh Latimer, who himself was burned at the stake in Oxford in October 1555.

John Glover, his brother, was also a Protestant and professed his beliefs freely. When the Bishop of Coventry heard of this he sent a letter to the Mayor and officers of Coventry to arrest him. It was by chance that John and another brother, William, were not at home when they arrived and they apprehended his brother Robert instead.

He was imprisoned and interrogated by the Bishop who pronounced his judgement of heresy and his sentence to death. On the day of his execution as he was going to the place and when he came into sight of the stake he was suddenly replenished with God's holy comfort and heavenly joys, that he cried out, clapping his hands to Austen Berhher, a minister and close friend, and said "Austen, He is come, He is come." This was the miraculous working of the Lord's hand upon him. He had been in such deep despair and had prayed for God's presence and comfort. God had waited till the time of his martyrdom to make his presence felt.

Robert Glover is my 10x Great Grandfather. This is the joy of researching my family tree. I have learned this and many more things about my family's history. I urge each of you to do the same.
